Kardiani is one of the island’s 45 inhabited villages, and one of the most beautiful. Situated 16 kilometres (10 miles) from the island’s main town and ferry port, Kardiani is to be found along the southwest coastal road, at 250 metres (800 feet) above the sea. The village is situated in an area of ancient habitation, dating back to the 8th century BCE. In present time, there are approximately 125 whitewashed old stone houses to be found along its narrow, sinuous, pedestrian-only streets. On a small central piazza, there is a Cafe which serves meals throughout the day and evening. There is also a restaurant in the village, with expansive views from its terrace. Nearby, there are two beautiful sandy beaches.
